Google and Nielsen Data for TV Ads

Google Inc. is the Internet search leader and is forced to sell more television ads, that is why it focus its attention on Nielsen Co., a influential company.
Nielson is a New York company that sells demographic data to advertisers and television station, for years.
Google will pay Nielsen big sum to get from them detailed information about the kinds of people who watch specific TV shows.

Nielsen will provide specific services, like: viewer’s ages, gender, some personal data, marital status, everything that help advertisers to choose the audience most likely to be interested in their service and products.

If Google has access to all the information that they need, it will be very important, because they will have more tools to target television ads as effectively as it has done on the Internet.

Brad Adgate, the Director of research for Horizon Media, which helps advertisers buy television ads, said that this indicates the fact that Google is very serious about selling more ads in the mainstream media.

Google has been sending TV ads, since May, for 14 million subscribers to EchoStar Communication Corp. Dish Network and Astound Broadband Cable Service. Astound and EchoStar used set- top boxes, which enabled Google to track when commercials were watched and for how long.

Collaboration with Nielsen’s data will help Google to have information on what kind of viewers are watching the commercials. This will be like the cherry on the cake, for Google. Nielson is trying to develop new measurement techniques and to extend its firm into more digital media, such as iPods and mobile phones, which creates more reasons for Google to want the alliance with them.

Keval Desai, the Google’s Director for Product Management for TV ads, said that Google is “thrilled” about its progress in TV advertising, but didn’t offered any financial specifics.

Although Google oriented into TV, radio and print ads, most of its money come from Internet. Google’s innovative idea leaded it to a market value of around $210 billion, being the second after Microsoft Corp., which is from the high- tech industry.

Oracle will buy BEA Systems?

oracle.jpg

Oracle proposed themselves to take control on BEA Systems. The BEA Systems Inc., which is a well known software market. The sum Oracle wants to invest in this business is of $6.66 billion. This sum is also for expanding their portfolio and to compete against their rival, SAP AG.
BEM makes software that supports business processes, such as supply chain management, billing and securities trading, by communicating between those programs and back-end systems, like databases.
Oracle has send a letter this week to BEA Systems managing board, in which they’ve written their offer of $17 per share, more then Thursday’s closing price, of $13.62. Last year, on 31 May, BEA Systems had more than 392 million outstanding shares.
Until now, BEA didn’t send any comment back to Oracle, because they are under pressure from Carl Icahn, the billionaire investor. The last one wants to buy the company for itself. On last week, he increased his stake in BEA Systems to 13.2 percent, or 51.8 million shares, from an 11 percent interest, previously.
Carl Icahn isn’t the only one who puts pressure on BEA. IBM Corp., which is based in Redwood Shores, makes pressure on BEM.
BEA Systems is the latest takeover target for Oracle, which was taken up more than 30 rival companies, in the last few years, under Larry Ellison managing.
Oracle is fighting for supremacy with SAP, the leading seller of business applications software, which helps companies manage their operations.

Open Source Security Tools Abound

All of us must take advantage of Open Source security tools, because it offers solutions for all our needs.

Why we must pay for commercial products, if open source fits our needs?

This message was coming from the president of consulting firm Sph3r3, Matthew Luallen. This had presented its opinion at the InfoSec Conference.
Luallen was pointing to few web sites, like Sourceforge.net and Freshmeat.net, which are the central repositories where we can find open source software and information.
He also told that InfoSec attendees about the rich supply of vulnerability scanners, penetration testing tools, authentication software, intrusion and detection systems, antispam and many more.

Luallen told that the WiKiD Strong Authentication Server is a two factor authentication server and he was referencing ones he thought among the most useful. Other great security tools are: Splunk for log analysis, SpamAssassin, which can identify spam, NTop for anomaly detection, penetration-testing tool BackTrack and TrueCrypt for encrypting data. Luallen said that all these examples can be very useful security tools, which all of us must consider securing enterprise networks.
If we think, technically, the Splunk Log Analysis can’t be considering an open source, but it is freeware.
Splunk Log Analysis can interpret log files for almost any application known and has become very useful because it can make use of the SANS Institute Top 5 log-analysis scripts.

Although he supports the uses of open source and freeware tools in enterprises, Luallen told that these open source tools might be bought or their makers could abandon them. So, it might be a risk that this easy to obtain software could have a backdoor or malware in it, inserted either deliberately or because a hacker compromised it. We all know that everything you download off the Internet could have a backdoor or a phone home associated with it.
